Redwood Library, 50 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI 02840

Puddingstone at the Redwood: SOLD OUT

On May 27th, Puddingstone and The Redwood Library And Athenaeum join together once again to begin a new series entitled “Jazz at the Redwood,” a venture that will bring some of the most notable jazz artists around today to Newport.

The inaugural concert will be from pianist Paul Cornish. Paul is a brilliant piano player who has been active in his work with the Joshua Redman Quartet and Kendrick Scott. However this past August he released his debut album as a bandleader on Blue Note Records to a stellar reception from critics and audiences alike. Every artist who records for Blue Note is part of a grand legacy, now in its 86th year. But pianist Paul Cornish is a torchbearer for several remarkable Blue Note legacies, all at once. Which makes You’re Exaggerating!, his powerfully lyrical trio debut for the label, a mission statement for Blue Note’s next generation.

With drummer Jonathon Pinson and bassist Jermaine Paul in tow, Paul will offer Newport a mix of material from the 2025 release, “You’re Exaggerating”, with new compositions sprinkled in as well. Please join us for what is sure to be a magnificent glimpse into the future of the iconic Blue Note Records label and the future of the jazz genre as a whole.

This Love Between Us

 —  —

Rough Point, 680 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI 02840

An intimate evening of song and chamber music exploring the enduring nature of love, friendship, and human connection.

On April 15 at Rough Point in Newport, soprano Katharine Dain, violist Caitlin Lynch, and pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute weave a richly layered program inspired by Reena Esmail’s This Love Between Us, a meditation on our shared humanity and the bonds that sustain us through time. Drawing on music by Brahms, Robert and Clara Schumann, Schubert, Bridge, Lanzilotti, and Esmail, the program moves from motherly tenderness to amorous dialogue, from the ache of separation to the “ray of eternal love” that persists even in loss.

Across the evening, listeners will encounter Brahms’ Sacred Lullaby, Bridge’s Three Songs, Clara Schumann’s Six Lieder, Robert Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock, Lanzilotti’s of moments, and Esmail’s This Love Between Us, set to texts by Kabir, Friedrich Rückert, Heinrich Heine, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Wilhelm Müller. These works, each in its own way, reveal love as joyful, yearning, fragile, and resilient—“joyful, enduring, always.”

Hosted in the atmospheric setting of Rough Point, the evening includes a complimentary wine service by Bow Bar and small bites, all included in the 75$ ticket price. Doors open at 6:30 pm, the concert begins at 7:00 pm, includes an intermission, and concludes at 9:00 pm.

Common Threads: Folk, Bach and beyond

 —  —

Jamestown Art Center, 18 Valley Street, Jamestown

Puddingstone is leaving the Island!

We’re thrilled to partner with the beloved Jamestown Arts Center for a beautiful afternoon of music and dance in their creative halls. Join us for a very special musical salon with Grammy-winning Canadian cellist Arlen Hlusko, returning after last year’s sold-out performance at Rough Point.

Program notes Common Threads: Folk, Bach, and Beyond is a solo recital program that asks how music can sustain connection, courage, and hope, foregrounding the shared humanity at the heart of listening together.

Arlen Hlusko curates a folk-inspired journey that moves between beloved traditional melodies and groundbreaking concert works. The program opens with an intimate Improvisation on “Little Birdie” (Traditional, arr. Frankie Carr) before moving into the luminous Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 6 and Leyla McCalla’s reflective Meditation No. 1. From there, familiar tunes such as “Shenandoah” (Traditional, arr. Arlen Hlusko) and “Scarborough Fair” (Traditional, arr. Frankie Carr) are heard alongside contemporary voices, including George Crumb’s iconic Sonata for Solo Cello and the fiery first movement of Zoltán Kodály’s Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 8, a work rooted in Hungarian folk traditions and renowned for expanding the cello’s expressive possibilities.

Throughout the afternoon, dance in selected pieces will be performed by Emily Jerant Hendrickson, allowing movement and music to converse and giving physical shape to the theme of the Musical Salon. Boston-based dancer Emily Jerant-Hendrickson has performed professionally in works by David Parker, Lorraine Chapman, little house dance, Sidra Bell, and others, and is an alumna of The Boston Conservatory with a BFA in dance. She currently serves as an assistant professor of dance at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where she teaches in the commercial and contemporary dance programs.

Please join us for our next concert of the "Musical Salon Series at Rough Point" in Newport.

We are delighted to present three piano trios spanning the breadth of the Romantic era: Beethoven’s “Ghost” Trio (Op. 70 No. 1), renowned for its haunting Largo movement that evokes a spectral mystery—a nickname coined in the 19th century to capture its otherworldly atmosphere; Cécile Chaminade’s Piano Trio No. 2 (Op. 34), a lyrical gem from a pioneering woman composer of the late 19th century; and Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 1 (Op. 8), a single-movement “Poème” composed at age 19, unfolding with poignant poetic introspection.

We are honored to present the internationally celebrated Sitkovetsky Trio who will be performing these exquisite works for us. Known as one of today’s foremost piano trios, their thoughtful and committed interpretations have earned them critical acclaim and invitations to prestigious venues worldwide, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Frankfurt Alte Oper, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Musée du Louvre, L’Auditori Barcelona, Wigmore Hall, and Lincoln Center in New York.

From Beethoven’s early Romantic heroism, through Chaminade’s elegant middle-period lyricism, to Shostakovich’s late-Romantic modernism, these works trace the rich evolution of musical Romanticism and the art of musical poetry across generations.

Actor, Nora Eschenbacher will enrich the evening by reading period letters related to the music, weaving an evocative literary thread through the performance. Nora appears courtesy of Actors' Equity Association.

Small bites and drinks are included. Doors open at 6:00 PM, with the performance beginning at 6:30 PM and concluding at 8:15 PM.
